Activities
The most visited of
Texas attractions is the Alamo, site of the 1836 battle that began the Texas rebellion against Mexico. The Alamo is carefully preserved in what is now downtown San Antonio. Nicknamed "The Blue Ghost," the USS Lexington is the famous World War II aircraft carrier that has been converted to a museum anchored in Corpus Christi Bay. You can even "Live Aboard" for an overnight stay for youth organizations. Padre Island National Seashore, encompassing 130,434 acres, is the longest undeveloped stretch of barrier island in the world, and offers a wide variety of flora and fauna as well as recreation. Galveston attractions include the Galveston Schlitterbahn waterpark, Moody Gardens, the Lone Star Flight Museum, a downtown neighborhood of historic buildings known as "The Strand," as well as many historical museums and mansions. The Dallas – Fort Worth area includes the Historic Stockyards, remarkable museums, a dazzling downtown area, and Texas Motor Speedway.
Events
The Lone Star Motorcycle Rally takes place in November and is a Galveston Park Board sponsored event, a four-day Island-wide affair attracting more than 250,000 bikers and motorcycle admirers. The largest of its kind in Texas, the rally features motorcycle processions, drag racing on the sand, Lil' Hawg races, live entertainment, poker runs, concept vehicles and much more! Buccaneer Days has been a late April annual event in Corpus Christi since the 1930's, featuring rodeos, musical performances, dance contests, a BBQ cookoff, a carnival and parades. Inaugurated by the late King of Latin Jazz, Tito Puente, the Brownsville Latin Jazz Festival has become an important event in South Texas' cultural calendar as well as an internationally recognized music festival, drawing Latin Jazz performers, musicians, and dancers from throughout the world to Brownsville.
Water Sports
The Texas Gulf Coast is perfect for a wide variety of water activities, including jet skiing, ocean kayaking, diving, parasailing, windsurfing, sailing, and of course swimming. The beautiful beaches and warm Gulf waters promote scuba diving, snorkeling, fishing and sun tanning as well.

History
Texas history has been shaped by being part of Spain, France, Mexico, the Republic of Texas, the Confederacy, and the United States. Starting in the 1820s, American and European immigrants began arriving in Texas, joined by settlers from Mexico. The people of Texas revolted against Mexico in 1836 and defeated an invading army. After a decade as an independent country, Texas joined the United States in 1845.
